Revelation snippets: The lessons of the night…

Jn 9:4, “I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; the night is coming, when no one can work.

The night is a time when we take a break and rest in order to be fit enough to tackle the following day. It’s a moment when we sleep and thus, by analogy, a moment of spiritual slumber and decreased vigilance. It’s also a time when the powers of darkness are let loose.

According to Jesus, the night is coming, when NO ONE – not even Him – can work. Although GOD is the Creator of time and seasons, and of the alternation between day and night, He has chosen to respect the authority that He has delegated to the night. This is why He told Joseph to flee to Egypt  with Mary and the baby (Jesus) in order to escape from King Herod’s killing spree. If GOD did not mobilize the armies of heaven to protect His only Begotten Son, and if He advised exile instead, then what does this tell us about us? We should also know when the time has come for us to run away. In Isaiah 43:2, He says: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” He did not say: “If you face waters or fire, I’ll make you fly!” In other words, waters and fire will not disappear. We will wrestle with the tides, even swallowing water at times; and we will walk through the fire, burning the sole of our feet and maybe even our hair in the process. He has simply promised to stay with us to ensure that we are neither overwhelmed by the waters nor consumed by the flames. It’s not because Jesus “cannot work” that we are on our own in the middle of our nights, as the devil will often have us believe. Indeed, the LORD neither slumbers nor sleeps and He has placed lights (stars) in the heavens to rule over the night: our night is never absolutely dark… Praise GOD (Ps 121:4; Gen 1:14-18)!

Man puts an end to darkness (Job 28:3). Jesus may have His hands ‘tied’ during the night, but the key is in our hands. We can (and must) put an end to darkness. He has given us power over all the power of the enemy and expects us to use it, to rule and to overcome all our adversaries (Lk 10:19, Ps 110:2, Rev 12:11).

Even when a test is absolutely inevitable – Jesus had to die on the Cross and we’ll all die etc. – GOD still gives us room to manoeuvre. For instance, the fact that a Christian will die of cancer, doesn't mean that they must also endure an incredible amount of pain. The pain and the side effects of their treatment can be controlled through prayers. Indeed, speaking of the End of the world –about which He himself has no control on-, Jesus said: Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath (Mat 24:20). He would not say this if our prayer had no incidence. So, if we can influence the circumstances of a day such as the end of the world, then how much more can we flex the circumstances of our night and testing? GOD is much more ready to collaborate with us than we realize.  He says: “Come now, let us reason together!” (Is 1:18); but either we do not come, or when we do come, we spend time crying or complaining instead of pleading and reasoning…

Night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard” (Ps 19:2-3). The night speaks and every test or challenge should make us wiser. It is written that GOD speaks and warns us through dreams and visions of the night and seals our instruction (Job 33:15-16). We are usually too distracted during the day and the LORD often has to wait the night to get our attention. It is out of the crucible that comes pure gold or silver and there is nothing better than testing to make us grow. In fact, even nature teaches us that it is mainly during the night that plants grow.

Finally, irrespective of the length and depth of the night, the day will always come (Is 9:1-2). Every test that GOD allows in our lives always comes with its exit door or expiry date (1Cor 10:13). GOD doesn’t want you to perish in the night; but He wants you to wake up and arise from the dead and shine; for your light, your deliverance, your salvation and your glory have come, Hallelujah! (Eph 5:14, Is 60:1). Remember, there are many jobs and activities that take place at night. In other words, despite your challenges and hardship, life goes on; it maybe different, but it goes on nonetheless and we must carry on with it.

I am sorry I was not able to blog over the last two weeks. it was due to reasons beyond my control. I wish you all a fantastic week and, to my daughter Anne-Florencea very special happy birthday and birth week, and a shower of blessings and love.

GOD bless!

Friends of GOD and heart of GOD: Friends' behaviour

During our Friendship Month, I did not just limit my studies to the heart’s qualities that friends of GOD must have; I also considered what true friends do for one another. There’s a passage that has greatly inspired me in that respect.

Mk 2.1-5, “And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’

These four men were the paralytic’s friends - as we learn elsewhere. This story highlights their determination to see their friend healed. They had resolved in their heart that enough was enough and their friend had suffered enough. They discussed the matter between themselves; went to their friend; grabbed him –and his mat- and then, made their way to Jesus. Nothing could/would stop them: neither the crowd nor the roof. “Come shine, come rain, Jesus must see our friend today and He’ll not just see him; He must do something about his condition. He must heal him. We are not carrying him and his bed back. This paralysis ends today!” These are the kind of friends that GOD likes and that’s why He gave them more than what they came looking for. On top of physical healing, their friend also received forgiveness for his sins (= salvation). Praise GOD!

Very often, when we decide to take/carry people (parents, friends, neighbours, colleagues, fellow citizens, brethren etc.) or situations before the LORD, we usually tend to abandon them on the way (cease to pray) after the first obstacles. There is no greater love than to give one’s life for one’s friends (Jn 15:14). Let’s not give up praying before GOD’s intervention in our favour and in favour of those (or that which) we are praying for.

Have a great and glorious week in Him. May He bless you with amazing things as you grow in your friendship with Him.

Friends of GOD and Heart of GOD (III)

Let's continue the series started two weeks ago and let's look at another biblical character: Moses. Exodus 32 tells us how the children of Israel fell into idolatry. They declared that it was the golden calf that they had just made which had delivered them from their bondage in Egypt! GOD was very angry and decided to destroy them, but to spare Moses and make a great nation out of him (vs. 8-10). As a good friend of GOD that he was, Moses was indeed privy to these plans. Just like Abraham before him, he pleaded for the people; however, he went even further. He told the LORD: “But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written” (vs. 32)! Moses did not only refused all the earthly blessings promised to him; but he also refused to spend eternity with a GOD, a friend, capable of such ‘cruelty’. What a lesson!

Indeed, GOD’s friends have a consuming passion for GOD’s people. They are ready to die and leave the eternity and GOD’s glorious presence for His people. This is what Jesus did. He left the glory which was His in heaven and He left the company of His Father, in order to spend many years amongst us sinners and even die on the Cross, carrying all our sins. In order to save us, He endured GOD turning His eyes away from Him and spent three days and three nights in the realm of the dead  – some even say in hell, i.e. out of the book of life – in order to secure our salvation. It is the same thing that Moses was ready to do for the children of Israel; and GOD granted both their requests. He relented from the disaster that He was about to bring on the israelites (Ex 32:14) and also forgave mankind in Christ.

Today, we are only concerned about ourselves. Our kids, spouse, houses, cars, jobs etc., in short,  our life and our own sake, are all that we try to save and all we plead for before GOD. Sometimes, it appears as if we care about our church or neighbourhood; but a closer look will reveal that it is not done out of genuine compassion; but because we need them. And thence, our prayer is rather selfish.

If we want to become friends of GOD, who will enjoy His blessings, protection/rest; if we want Him to increase our productivity and share His plans and secrets with us, then we must passionately and selflessly love His people and be ready to give our life for them (Jn 15:13). And to give our life simply means to give our time, money, talents and resources sacrificially.

Have a great week in Christ Jesus and let’s meet again online, next week, for the concluding part of this series.

GOD bless!
